Description:
Give the right instruments to a genius and you will achieve unprecedented results. This phrase encapsulates what Tom Murphy and the Gibson Custom Shop have accomplished with the new Murphy Lab project.
The new Gibson management has indeed decided to bring Tom Murphy back directly into the Gibson Custom Shop to create a new generation of aging techniques that are even more accurate and realistic than before: a decisive break from previous production methods and a sensational leap forward in terms of quality results.
The Murphy Lab perfectly recreates, using natural processes rather than manual ones, the same aging conditions of the finish found on original vintage instruments. The extremely thin finishes are characterized by a noticeable and consistent "crackle," providing an absolutely authentic feel. It genuinely feels like holding an original vintage instrument but with all the quality and performance that only the Gibson Custom Shop can offer today.
In particular, this Gibson Custom Murphy Lab 1964 SG Standard Reissue w/Maestro Vibrola Heavy Aged faithfully reproduces the SG Standard from 1964, the year the Maestro™ Vibrola was introduced.
On a technical level, we are talking about instruments that represent the pinnacle ever reached by the Gibson Custom Shop in terms of accuracy and quality: they incorporate all the technical innovations—such as "period-correct" capacitors and finally "unpotted" Custom Buckers—along with the wealth of experience and quality generated by the recent True Historic series, which has allowed the Gibson Custom Shop’s production to make a remarkable leap forward.
Aesthetically, we also find details such as the material of the inlays, which, combined with the heavily aged hardware, simulate the character, ambiance, and unique sensations of an original model from Gibson's Golden Era.
